The 777 Challenge

The challenge is to go to page 7 of your current work in progress and post at least 7 lines from the page, then tag 7 other authors and challenge them to do the same on their blogs.

I was tagged by Devon Matthews, who was tagged by Lyn Horner who was tagged by Jacquie Rogers and so on.

My western romance compadres may be a little disappointed that my WIP is a mystery, the sequel to Deadly Legacy.

In 2018, rookie detective Kate Garrett lives in the shadow of her near-legendary father Joe. When Joe dies unexpectedly, he leaves Kate half interest in Garrett Investigations, his last case that ties to three murders, a partner she can't stand and a legacy to live up to.

Kate also inherits Joe's share of the downtown building that houses the office. A month before she had been a violent crimes detective. Now she's a private investigator and landlord with a problem tenant, as we find out on page seven.

“Good afternoon, Mr Koehne.” With only a moment of hesitation, she took his outstretched hand.
“Always a pleasure to see you,” he said, cupping her hand in both of his. “I was wondering if you had a chance to consider my offer.”
“I already considered it, Mr Koehne.” She pulled her hand free. “I said no.”
    “Ms Garrett . . . Kate . . . may I call you Kate?”
    “I wish you wouldn’t.”
That put a small road bump in his pitch, but didn’t slow him long enough for her to make a run for the door.
“The thing is,” he said, blocking exit, “Outreach Dating has plenty of men on its lists, men who are looking for Ms Right – or at least Ms Right for now – but we don’t have many women."
     "Mr Koehne--"
"I’ll throw in a hair and face make-over before your interview. Not that you aren’t lovely as is, but the fashion is for up-dos and swing-era-retro is in, so if you have an appropriate outfit . . . Wouldn’t you like a date for New Year’s Eve? All we have to do is book a time . . .”
“Time is one thing I don’t have,” she said pointedly. “I’m also short on money, specifically the money you owe for last month’s rent.”
It was better than a boot in the rear for getting rid of the pest. He exited, post haste, with a hearty “Happy Holidays” before she had a chance to extract another promise he wouldn’t keep.
